Popular web technology news blog ReadWriteWeb has published several Best Products 2008 lists that highlight the best online applications of the past year. Our favorite lists in the series are:

2009 predictions Spotlight

The end of the year is also a popular time to make predictions about what the new year will bring us. Peter Kim, a former Forrester analyst, has compiled a comprehensive list of Social media predictions 2009, as seen from the point of view of 14 top social marketing professionals. Also, Pew Internet has published the report The Future of the Internet III, in which they present how experts see the future of technology and its role in the year 2020.

  • In the last issue we spotlighted Google Friend Connect and Facebook Connect, two competing technologies that allow users to sign in to supported sites with their existing accounts. Now, MySpace has relaunched their previously announced Data Availability product under the name MySpaceID, which will allow user to log in third-party sites with their MySpace account. Unlike Facebook Connect, MySpaceID supports open standards and works with Google Friend Connect.
  • Facebook now has over 140 million active users worldwide and a growth rate of 600 000 users each day. If you're interested in more demographic statistics, check out this interactive online tool.
  • Sony has finally released the first open beta version of Home, the virtual world for Playstation 3 users.

Tool Spotlight

Site owners can now facilitate the process of signing up for a website by using either Google Friend Connect or Facebook Connect. Google Friend Connect allows site visitors to sign in with their existing Google, Yahoo, AIM or OpenID accounts and can also provide a variety of social features through OpenSocial gadgets. Similarly, Facebook Connect allows site visitors to sign in with existing Facebook accounts and (if the user allows it) also publish info about user activity back on Facebook. Both services have the advantage of a large user base and make single sign-on easier for the average user.

Presentation Spotlight

Razorfish's presentation Portable Social Graphs - Imagining their Potential explores some of the potential uses of Facebook Connect that could make websites more social and relevant for the users. This presentation can be used to encourage companies to think about how they can transform their applications or services into a social utilities.

  • Forterra's new version of its virtual worlds platform OLIVE will include integration with Lotus Sametime (IBM's enterprise communication an collaboration suite). For more information, see this video demonstration.
  • Both YouTube and Facebook now support High Definition (HD) videos. In addition to that, Facebook now allows their videos to be embedded on other sites, which is something that video sharing sites like YouTube have been offering for a long time.
  • YouTube invites musicians from around the world to audition for the YouTube Symphonic Orchestra. See more info on the project's official YouTube channel.
